Things to do in Hastings and Battle from Vine Cottage

Out & About

Right in the heart of 1066 Country

Vine Cottage sits in the village of Westfield, perfectly placed between the historic market town of Battle and the seaside town of Hastings. Battle is about 10 minutes away and Hastings and the coast about 15, with the medieval streets of Rye, the vast sands at Camber and the vineyards of the High Weald all within an easy drive. Whether you are here for history, walking, food or simply the sea air, you can do plenty and still be back for a soak in the hot tub by evening.

Distances below are approximate driving times from the cottage.

About 15 minutes

Hastings & St Leonards

A lively seaside town that mixes history, culture and proper family fun. Wander the cobbled streets and net huts of the Old Town, ride the Victorian cliff railways up to Hastings Country Park, explore the smuggling caves at Smugglers Adventure, or spend a rainy afternoon at the Blue Reef Aquarium. Neighbouring St Leonards brings independent cafes, seafront dining and a more bohemian feel.

About 10 minutes

Battle

A charming market town world famous for 1066. Walk the very field where the Battle of Hastings unfolded at Battle Abbey and Battlefield, browse the independent shops, delis and tearooms along the High Street, and stretch your legs in Battle Great Woods.

About 25 minutes

Rye

A beautifully preserved medieval town of cobbled streets and half timbered houses. Climb famous Mermaid Street, take in the smuggling history at the Ypres Tower, browse the antique shops and galleries, or head out to Rye Harbour Nature Reserve for big skies and birdwatching.

Getting around

Vine Cottage is set in a peaceful rural spot, so you will want a car or local taxis to reach most places. Battle station is the most convenient for trains to London Charing Cross (around 90 minutes), with smaller local stations at Three Oaks and Doleham for Hastings and Ashford. Reliable local taxi firms serve the area, and there is a private driveway with parking for several cars, plus an EV charger, at the cottage.
